Wolfs, the Apple Original crime thriller that re-pairs longtime collaborators George Clooney and Brad Pitt, had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Sept. 1.
Set for a limited theatrical release Sept. 20, before hitting the streamer the following week, it follows Clooney as a professional fixer hired to cover up a high-profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) arrives, the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together as their night spirals out of control in unexpected ways.
The film, which marks the veteran actors’ more than 20-year-long partnership, premiered out of competition, as the official screening was greeted with a five-minute, 35-second ovation inside the Sala Grande Sunday. In attendance at the red carpet in addition to the two stars were cast members Amy Ryan (alongside her husband and daughter) and Austin Abrams. Richard Gere and Cate Blanchett (who stars in fellow Apple TV+ release Disclaimer) also hit the carpet. Writer-director Jon Watts (best known for the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man films) was not in attendance, who, Clooney told the press this morning, is sick with COVID: “He flew all the way here and he got COVID and he’s now in bed.”
Deadline’s review was mixed, stating, “as a mop-up procedural, Wolfs is often very funny and most ingenious” though Clooney and Pitt’s camaraderie “leaves one with the sneaking suspicion that, at times, they might be having a bit more fun than we are.”
The 81st Venice International Film Festival runs from Aug. 28 to Sept. 7 2024.
